In January 2008, pharmaceutical company Pfizer updated the label for its anti-smoking drug Chantix. The new label warns of psychiatric side effects, including suicidal behavior.

Following the Carter Albrecht case, about 5,000 complaints on the side effects of Chantix were reported to the FDA, including 55 reported suicides, 199 reports of suicidal thoughts, and 417 complaints of depression. Other reported side effects included anger, aggression, amnesia, hallucinations and homicidal thoughts. In November 2007, the FDA issued an alert of the potential for psychiatric symptoms in some patients, including suicidal thoughts or suicide. Pfizer was asked to re-label Chantix earlier this year.

Doctors who prescribe Chantix have been warned by the FDA to carefully monitor patients who have been prescribed the drug, particularly those who have a history of mental or psychiatric problems. Potential side effects include anxiety, nervousness, tension, depressed mood, unusual behaviors, and suicidal intentions or actions.
