Rhode Island Medtronic and Guidant Defibrillator Injury Attorneys
Two major manufacturers of cardiac defibrillators have issued recalls because of potentially fatal malfunctions.
Guidant Corporation recently recalled more than 136,000 cardiac defibrillators after discovering that a magnetic switch in some of the defibrillators and pacemakers could get stuck in the closed position. This prevented the devices from functioning properly in an emergency. The switch defect also caused the battery to run down too quickly. Guidant has recalled the following models:
- Insignia
- Nexus
- Contak Renewal and Contak Renewal 2
- Contak Renewal TR and TR2
- Ventak Prizm AVT
- Ventak Prizm 2 and Prism 2 DR
- Viatlity
- Viatlity 2
- Vitality AVT
- Renewal AVT
- Contak Renewal 3 and 4, Renewal 3 and 4 AVT and Renewal RFs
Medtronic Inc. recalled over 80,000 implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRT-Ds) after learning of a battery malfunction that could cause loss of power. The affected devices were manufactured between April 2001 and December 2003. The following models were included in the recall:
- Marquis VR Model 7230
- Marquis DR Model 7274
- Maximo VR Model 7232
- Maximo DR Model 7278
- InSync Marquis Model 7277
- InSync II Marquis Model 7289
- InSync III Marquis Model 7279
It’s important to note that additional devices may also be affected, so you should consult with the manufacturer if you have a defibrillator made by either company.
