Here is the thing nobody advertises: the lawyer on the billboard is usually not the person handling your file. A firm that spends heavily on advertising has to sign a high volume of cases to pay for it, and high volume means your case gets assigned.
You will be managed competently. You will also spend a year talking to people whose names you did not recognize when you signed.
Gemma Law Associates is built the other way around, and we are direct about the tradeoff. We are smaller. We do not run the biggest ad buy in Rhode Island. What you get instead is the ability to call Peter Gemma or Mark Gemma and actually speak with them.
Looking for a family-owned personal injury lawyer in Rhode Island? Call (401) 467-2300. You will not be routed through a screening center.
What Does Direct Attorney Access Actually Mean?
It means the attorney whose name is on the door knows the facts of your case without pulling the file first, and that you can reach that attorney rather than a case manager relaying messages.
Concretely, that changes three things. You get answers about strategy from the person making the decisions. You are not re-explaining your medical history to a fourth staff member in month six. And when an insurer makes an offer, the person evaluating it has been with the case since the first phone call.
This is not a service upgrade. It is a structural difference in how the firm is built, and it is the reason we do not take on more volume than the attorneys here can personally carry.

Who Actually Runs This Firm?
Peter Gemma and Mark Gemma, the sons of the man who founded it.
Their grandfather, also named Alfred, emigrated from Italy and opened Gemma’s Market in Providence. The market is still there. Their father, Alfred J. Gemma, took a different route, graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1959, spent six months at a law firm, and then went out on his own. He practiced alone for five years before hiring anyone.
On our about page, Peter describes what carried over from one generation to the next this way:
“Although my father took a very different path from my grandfather, he adopted my grandfather’s work ethic and loyalty to our community. My father is very humble and generous. He treated clients like family and would take the time to speak with anyone who would call with a question or concern.”
That last clause is not a sentiment. It is an operating rule, and it is the one Peter and Mark kept.
What Does the Firm’s Experience Add Up To?
More than 100 years of combined legal experience across our attorneys.
Peter Gemma earned his BA from Clark University in 1987 and his JD from Suffolk University in 1990, joining his father’s practice that same year. He is admitted in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and before the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island.
He belongs to the Rhode Island Association for Justice, the American Association for Justice, the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Bar Associations, and the Justinian Law Society.
Mark Gemma is President of the Rhode Island Association for Justice, having previously served as President Elect, Secretary and Treasurer, and on its Board of Governors. He holds a Council of Presidents office with the American Association for Justice and serves as a Rhode Island State Delegate.
He was named a Rhode Island Rising Star for Personal Injury Plaintiff work in Rhode Island Super Lawyers, and is a past President of the Roger Williams Law School Alumni Association.
The firm’s associate attorneys are Henry S. Monti, Charles Vucci, and Domenic Loffredo. You can read each of their backgrounds on our attorney pages.

Why Does Continuity Matter in an Injury Case?
Because serious injury cases outlast most other professional relationships you will have this year.
A straightforward claim takes months. A contested one takes two years or more. A catastrophic injury case can run longer than that, and during it, the facts get complicated in ways that are hard to hand off cleanly. Medical treatment changes course. A client’s prognosis shifts. An insurer makes an argument that only makes sense if you remember what was said in month three.
Firms with high turnover lose that thread, and clients feel it as having to start over. A family firm where the same attorneys stay put does not have that problem, which is less a virtue than an arithmetic consequence of who owns the place.

What Do Clients Actually Say?
Our clients rate the firm 4.9 stars, and when people tell us why they called, they mention the reviews more often than anything else.
That tells us something specific. People choosing an injury lawyer are not comparing legal credentials, because they have no way to evaluate them. They are looking for evidence of how a firm treats people when nobody is watching. Other clients are the only honest source for that.
Our homepage puts it in five words: “Where You’re Treated Like Family.” Our About page says it more plainly: “We’ll treat you right. That’s how we were raised.”
You can also review our case results, which lists outcomes from $100,000 to $10 million. These past results are in no way intended to guarantee that a similar result can be obtained in your case. Each case is different and involves unique factual and legal issues.
What Does It Cost to Hire Gemma Law?
Nothing up front, and nothing at all unless we recover for you.
Cost is the first question almost every person asks us, so here is the direct answer. We work on contingency. Our fee is a percentage of the recovery, agreed in writing before we start. We advance the costs of investigating the case, obtaining records, and retaining outside professionals. If the case does not result in a recovery, you owe us nothing, and we do not bill you for those costs.
The consultation is free, with no obligation attached. Some of the people who call us do not have a case worth pursuing, and we tell them so.
Is the Firm Part of the Community, or Just Located Here?
Gemma Law has sponsored an Elmwood Little League team for over 20 years and supports SquashBusters, an urban squash program built around college, character, and health. Alfred J. Gemma set that example early, volunteering at organizations like McAuley House.
We mention this for one reason. A firm that has been in the same neighborhood for generations has a different set of incentives than a practice that arrived for the market. Reputation here is local, cumulative, and hard to repair. That is a constraint we are glad to operate under.
Our office is at 231 Reservoir Ave in Providence. There is one office, and it is the one we have always had.
Questions People Ask Before They Hire Us
Will I actually talk to Peter or Mark, or just once at the beginning?
Throughout. That is the point of the arrangement. You will also work with staff on scheduling and records, which is normal, but the attorney handling your case is reachable.
Does a smaller firm have the resources for a serious case?
Yes. Our published results include recoveries in the seven and eight figures, including a $10 million settlement. The relevant question is not firm size but whether a firm will fund outside professionals and prepare a case for trial, and we do.
What if my case needs a lawyer in another state, or an area you do not handle in house?
We co-counsel rather than turn people away. Referring a matter out with the right partner serves a client better than keeping something we are not positioned to handle well.
How soon after an accident should I call?
Early. Evidence disappears, surveillance video is overwritten, and insurers contact injured people within days. Calling costs nothing and preserves options that close quickly.
Do you handle cases in Spanish?
Yes. We serve a Spanish-speaking community, our answering service runs a Spanish line, and we maintain content in Spanish.
The Right Question to Ask Any Firm You Call
Alfred Gemma
Not how many cases they have won. Ask who will be answering the phone in eight months when you have a question at nine at night and you are not sure it is important enough to bother anyone with.
That is the moment that tells you what kind of firm you hired. We would rather you ask it before you sign than find out after.
