Alfred’s Influence on His Son Mark
Mark Gemma goes above and beyond for his clients. He empathizes with what they’re going through and wants to help them. He expects the same thing from everyone who works at Gemma Law Associates, Inc. Mark said:

My dad had a genuine interest in his clients, and he loved getting to know them and hearing their stories, not just stories about their case, but stories about their families and who they are as individuals. Alfred Gemma’s Backstory
So, who is Alfred Gemma? At a young age, Alfred’s father emigrated from Italy and opened a market called Gemma’s Market in Providence. The market is still there.
His father (Mark and Peter’s great-grandfather), also named Alfred, was a very generous, humble, industrious, and hardworking man. He eventually became the owner of a sausage factory and ran that for many years. Alfred tells his family stories of working in both businesses as a young boy and teen. Seeing firsthand how physically hard and demanding the work was, he opted to focus on school.
Alfred’s father also appreciated the importance of education as he left school after the 7th grade when he came to America. With his parents’ support and encouragement Alfred attended an elite boys’ high school in Providence and obtained an Ivy League college education. He graduated from one of the top law schools in the country, the University of Chicago, in 1959.
Alfred spent six months working for a law firm before striking out on his own. He remained a solo practitioner for five years before adding a second lawyer to the operation. He started his firm in Providence and raised his family there. Alfred spent his law career helping people receive compensation for other people’s negligence. He helped people become whole after suffering from negligence and wrongdoing. His sons, Mark and Peter, run the personal injury law firm now and continue to help people in the same way.
Peter Gemma Exemplifies His Father’s Strong Values
When you have a conversation with Peter Gemma, you can tell he is someone who is always going to do the right thing. He has strong ethics and wins by doing things the right way. He is always available to answer client questions and treats everyone in his office with dignity and respect. Like his brother Mark, Peter learned from watching his dad interact with clients and employees. Peter states:
“Although my father took a very different path from my grandfather, he adopted my grandfather’s work ethic and loyalty to our community. My father is very humble and generous. He treated clients like family and would take the time to speak with anyone who would call with a question or concern.”
Alfred’s example left a strong impression on Peter. So, it’s no surprise that Peter’s clients use words like professional, excellent and respectful to describe him.
Community Is Important
Rhode Island has been home to the Gemma family for several generations. It’s where they’ve raised their families and established their professional careers. Alfred set an example of volunteering at organizations like the McAuley House to give back to the community as much as possible. Gemma Law has sponsored an Elmwood Little League team for the past 21 years.
In addition, Gemma Law supports SquashBusters, an urban squash program promoting college, character, and health. Mark Gemma also volunteers at a charter school in Central Falls, RI. He recruited several of his friends and together they support the school financially and go on outings with some of the most at-risk kids without a father figure at home. They have taken the kids bowling, race car driving, and to a Celtics game. Gemma Law also contributes to many other local charities.
